Should you rent a child car seat or bring your own?

Bring your own seat if you can. Consumer Reports' child passenger safety technicians recommend this, because rental seat quality varied widely between the agencies they checked, and rental staff are not usually trained to help with installation. Renting is a workable fallback only if you can inspect the seat and read its manual before you drive away.

What does a rental child car seat cost in 2026?

The sources do not give a 2026 price. The only figure available is from Consumer Reports' 2013 check of rental agencies, which found an average of about $10 a day for a rented seat. Rates now depend on the agency, the location and the season, so confirm the current daily charge at the counter or in your booking before you decide.

The daily fee adds up. Consumer Reports noted that a trip longer than a few days can bring the total close to the price of a new seat. For a trip of a week or more, compare the total rental charge with the cost of a basic seat or a lightweight travel seat.

Why did Consumer Reports advise against rental seats?

Consumer Reports compared seats at two large agencies, and the difference was large:

  • At one agency, the seats were stored in clean plastic bags, and each manual was tied to its seat.
  • At the other, the seats were kept in an outdoor shed. Most had no manual, and many were unusable because of broken parts, missing labels, carriers separated from their bases, or expiry dates that had passed.

When the reviewers asked whether those were the seats on offer, staff said newer seats were available. Consumer Reports did not check those. Because the check dates from 2013, current inventory may be better or worse, and you cannot know which applies until you see the seat yourself.

Who can help you fit a seat correctly?

Rental staff are often willing to help but are not usually trained in child passenger safety. If you rent a seat, you will likely need other sources of help. The Governors Highway Safety Association lists three:

  • Car seat manufacturers. Many offer phone support and video guides for installation.
  • Child Passenger Safety Technicians (CPSTs). These are nationally certified by Safe Kids Worldwide and can give hands-on help, sometimes by video.
  • Inspection stations. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) keeps a directory of stations that offer hands-on checks, by appointment or at public events.

Consumer Reports also suggests reading the seat's manual and installation videos before the trip, so you are not learning the seat for the first time in a car park.

Do child seat laws apply to rental cars?

Yes, in the sense that every US state and territory has a child passenger safety law. The rules differ by state and depend on the child's age, weight and height. Most states require booster seats for children who have outgrown a car seat but are too small for an adult belt, and many require children to ride in the rear seat when possible.

Penalties for a first offence range from $10 to $500 in different states, and some states also add driver's licence points. The Governors Highway Safety Association's position is that rental cars should not be exempt from these laws. That is a recommendation for lawmakers, not a summary of each state's current wording, so check the rules for the state where you will drive with your State Highway Safety Office.

What are the options if you are flying?

If you fly, the seat can usually be gate-checked free on most airlines, which can reduce handling damage. Consumer Reports says staff can often hand it back at the jet bridge after landing. Confirm the policy with your airline before you travel, since it was described in a 2013 article.

Two other options from Consumer Reports:

  • Buy a second, cheap travel seat for trips, so your everyday seat is not damaged in transit.
  • Ship a seat ahead to a friend or relative. They can bring it to the airport or install it in their own car. This needs planning, but it removes the risk of damage in baggage handling.
